At Braintree, the after-school program starts with check in at 2:15 and runs until 5:30. Children receive outdoors time, snack time, creative time and (for 3rd - 6th graders), homework time. At Randolph Elementary, the after school program is run by the Robins Nest out of Gifford Medical Center. The program begins with check in at 2:20 and runs until 5:30. Children receive snacks, outdoor play time, structured activities and homework time.
Extracurricular activities expand the horizons of our students. Clubs are based on the interests of students and teachers together. Some vary from year to year, but clubs have included: comic book club, homework club, MathCounts team, computer programming team, felting club, and art club. We perform musical theatre, puppet shows, talent shows, and concerts. We do mock trials each year and participate in Model UN. As part of our international focus, we partner with a school in Hamburg, Germany for our students to participate in an exchange program.
Figure 2 shows what effect Head Start has based on what the child would otherwise be getting. The Head Start treatment bars are equivalent to the techniques used in the HHS reports and show about a fifth of a standard deviation increase in cognitive skill. In both papers, if a child would otherwise be in home-based care, Head Start caused a larger increase in cognitive skill than the baseline. Head Start caused more than a third of a standard deviation increase in cognitive skill in the Kline and Walters analysis and almost a quarter of a standard deviation increase in Feller, Grindal, Miratrix, and Page. For children who otherwise would have gone to preschool, going to Head Start did not make an additional difference in cognitive skills.
The facility next to the school on West Hillcrest Drive was officially opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. The new building has a computer lab with 38 work stations, a homework room, games area, a soundproofed music room, space for arts and crafts and a large multipurpose room.
The heart of the after-school program is the "Power Hour," starting when kids get out of school at 3:30 p.m. "We make sure it's quiet so they have a good environment to do their homework," explained Rachel Melia, 21, an English major at CSU Channel Islands, who is employed to supervise the students as they study.
